Homeopath Carol Russell – An Interview with a Homeopath and Natural Health Practitioner (part 2)

Who is Carol Russell?

Carol Russell is a homeopath and natural health practitioner living and working in Hedge End near Southampton. I asked Carol some questions to find out more about her and her work.

This is part 2 of the interview, for part 1 click here.

Do you have to do any continuous study or maintain membership of any professional bodies?

Continuous study is something I really enjoy and especially during lockdown, webinars were a big  part of my working life.  They are instructive and interactive so I feel an active member of the Homeopathic community. I am a member of the Society of Homeopaths which supplies my insurance cover and requires that I do continuous study as part of my membership. You never stop learning in Homeopathy!

Having had homeopathy myself, I know it is effective. Coming from a mostly science and technical background I struggle to understand how it works, can you give me some idea as to the principles behind it.

Homeopathy is based on the principle that “like treats like”, a substance that causes symptoms in a healthy person can be used to treat a person suffering with similar symptoms. An example of this is how cutting an onion can make eyes smart and stream. Allium Cepa (onion)  Homeopathic remedy  is used to treat these symptoms in patients. Another example is Apis Mel (Bee sting) which is used to help people who have been stung and have swelling and hotness on the site of the injury. The substances are very highly  diluted which has led some critics to say that Homeopathic remedies are ‘nothing but water”. However some research does suggest that repeated vigorous shaking during the manufacturing process may cause new water structures to be formed, which capture information about the original substance dissolved in water. While science has yet to explain exactly how Homeopathic medicines work on a molecular or cellular level, laboratory experiments suggest that “ultrahigh dilutions” as used in Homeopathic medicines have biological effects.

I know you offer other services, what have you trained in and what do you currently offer?

I have been in Holistic therapy for over 25 years and have trained over the years in many therapies including aromatherapy, massage, Indian head massage and taught Reiki as well. At the moment I offer Reflexology, Pregnancy Reflexology, Reiki, Bach Flower Remedies and Life coaching along with nutritional advice. These all complement each other very well alongside Homeopathy. It helps me offer the best range of treatments I can to help a person on a bespoke level with their particular issue.

I’m particularly interested in having my hair analysed, what does this entail and how would I go about it?

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is a very useful adjunct. It can be used independently or alongside other therapies I offer. It is really useful for me helping women with unexplained infertility for example. A small sample of the head hair is sent off for analysis and a report is sent back giving details of mineral levels within the body as well as any toxic substances such as mercury or lead for example. This report shows what your levels of these substances are. It shows highs and lows and gives very useful information about how these imbalanced levels may be affecting your health. Some imbalances may be too subtle to show up in a blood test but as this shows your levels over the last 3 months, it gives a much broader picture. Suggested changes  of diet are included in the report which can  help correct these issues  as well as suggested supplementation if needed.  I go through the report in detail with the patient to clarify all the information. As a Homeopath, it is very useful for me as I can use this information to help in my choices of remedies as a support. A lot of remedies are mineral based so can also help support correction of imbalances. HTMA  offers a more scientific option which some people may feel more reassuring.

On your website you have letters after your name, what do they mean?

RSHom means I am a registered member of the Society Of Homeopaths who cover my insurance needs. It means that I have the correct professional  training.

SDSHom refers to where I trained in Homeopathy which was the South Downs School of Homeopathy.

IIHHT is my qualification in reflexology which I obtained back in 1995! It stands for International Institute of Health and Holistic Therapies. Again this means I have the correct professional training.
IHBC relates to all my massage and aromatherapy qualifications which I’ve had since 1997. It stands for International Health and Beauty Council.

I do have quite a few other qualifications as well which relate to advanced reflexology techniques I’ve learnt over the years (ART) & VRT which stands for Vertical Reflexology Technique.

Many practitioners of complimentary therapies have struggled over the last 18 months due to periods of lockdown. Has this affected your business? How have you adapted as a result?

Lockdown hit a lot of people hard and that included me. Any physical therapy I practiced had to be stopped as I wasn’t allowed people in my home clinic at Hedge End. Luckily Homeopathy can be practiced online as it is a talking experience so was able to continue supporting my patients through these challenging times. I had to learn about zoom very quickly indeed and I was posting all the Homeopathic remedies to patients instead of issuing them whilst they are with me in the clinic.

What would be the best way for anyone reading this to contact you or book an appointment?

The best way to contact me for information is through the website www.thefamilyhomeopath.co.uk. Appointments for any of my therapies I offer can be booked here. This allows the person to choose their own appointment  day and time which works for them. Confirmation emails and texts will confirm the booking as well.

If someone would like to book an appointment but is unsure what would be best for them what would you suggest?

If someone is undecided what treatment they need or needs some extra information I recommend booking  a free discovery call of 20 minutes through the website.  There is no pressure during this call to book a full consultation with me. Again they are choosing a time and date that works for them. The call can then be done by FaceTime, WhatsApp, Zoom or just a phone call. This means that I will be able to speak to you at a prearranged time convenient to both of us. I am then able to listen uninterrupted to the issues you have and then talk about what I can offer in the way of treatment. I found that this is a very effective way of agreeing with the person an action plan of how I can work with them to improve their health.
